To access the reception, guests and visitors have to walk past each of the front rooms, which can result in a few awkward glances. On a positive note, the roller blinds block out most of the morning light allowing you to sleep in, although one pesky garden light managed to shine its way through a gap and into our eyes. It won't set your world on fire, but it will change your view of motels for the better.

JUST minutes from our villa, the 18-hole traditional links-style championship course beckons. Just minutes in the other direction, the beach beckons. And then there's the tennis courts. And the indoor and outdoor pools. And the day spa. What's a family to do first in the lush surrounds of a central coast resort?First, we slow down and browse our villa stay. A bottle of wine and gift pack await us as we note the bathrooms, ultra-modern kitchen opening on to a large dining and living area, upstairs and downstairs verandahs with tables and chairs, flat-screen TV and iPod docking station.The villa's main bedroom is huge, with a king-size bed and windows overlooking the golf course, gardens and beach. THE forest of nondescript residential high-rises looks almost out of place in Shanghai's charming former French Concession neighbourhood. Hidden somewhere within, however, is one man's ode to the arty propaganda that fuelled Mao-era China. I just have to find it.My target, and my confusion, must be obvious because, without a word exchanged between us, the guard at the complex's security barrier disappears into a little hutch and re-emerges with a business card-cum-map marked with the words Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre.I eventually locate the right building, where I get into an elevator and plummet to a basement that's eerily quiet save for the hum of a generator.A door leads into the art centre, the pride and joy of Yang Pei Ming, an artist who has gathered more than 5000 posters produced by China's Communist Party between 1949 and 1979. UGG Roxy Tall Boots It's a collection, he says, no one else in the world can match.The exhibition space is small – what you'd expect, perhaps, from a basement apartment. Indeed, it takes only a little more than an hour to peruse the exhibits in the handful of rooms. Running late, as always, there's no time to pilfer pantry produce. Fifty minutes out of Melbourne, we stop outside Gateway Estate in Coldstream. Part grocer, deli, farm gate and cellar door, this pint-sized emporium is the perfect pit stop for good-quality comestibles. Minutes later and with a well-stocked boot, we're back on track, pulling into the carport at the 17-hectare hillside weekender with 360-degree views of the Yarra Valley.Gracedale is an expansive low-rise property with a contemporary feel, architect-designed in sympathy with the landscape.After warm greetings from the hosts, we're ushered to the west wing. Behind a sliding door, a compact kitchenette with fridge, microwave and tea and coffee-making provisions runs along one wall and a walk-in wardrobe along the other. Smart thinking. I spy thick towelling robes, an extra blanket, an iron and ironing board but no chunky house-baked cookies left. Only crumbs. Flashback to the chocolate thins on the bedside tables. I pounce on the bed to find empty wrappers.Time to claim some bench space. There's an impressive bathroom - double shower, Natio pamper pack, under-floor heating and luxury Kohler spa overlooking the valley. A cleverly designed mirror reflects nature's art through soaring spa-to-ceiling windows. There's something therapeutic about watching cattle graze.I snap out of my mesmeric gaze, read magazines for a while and flick through the compendium. It's filled with all sorts of information from a welcome note, how everything works, emergency numbers, things to do and restaurant suggestions to a pillow menu and in-house cellar list. Considerate. Acupuncture helps prevent chronic dry mouth

Acupuncture, when given alongside radiation therapy for head and neck cancer, can reduce the devastating side effect of dry mouth, a new study has suggested.Xerostomia, commonly known as severe dry mouth, is characterized by reduced salivary flow, which commonly affects patients receiving radiotherapy for head and neck cancer and the condition impairs the quality of life for patients, as it creates difficulties eating, speaking and sleeping, while also increasing the risk for oral infections.Lorenzo Cohen and his team from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center examined 86 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, out of which 40 were randomized to acupuncture while 46 to the standard of care.Those in the treatment arm received acupuncture therapy three times per week during the seven-week course of radiotherapy.Patients were evaluated before radiotherapy, weekly during radiotherapy, and then again one and six months later, and the results were based on data derived from two self-report questionnaires and measuring actual saliva flow.Patients completed the Xerostomia Questionnaire (XQ), an eight-item survey which assessed symptoms consistent with the condition. UGG Classic Cardy XQ scores under 30 corresponded to mild or no symptoms of xerostomia.The second measure, MD Anderson Symptom Inventory Head and Neck (MDASI-HN), ranked the severity of cancer-related symptoms, other than xerostomia, and their interference with quality of life.The researchers also measured saliva flow rates using standardized sialometry collection techniques.“What was quite remarkable was that we started to see group differences as early as three weeks into radiotherapy for the development of xerostomia, cancer-related symptoms that interfere with quality of life, and saliva flow rates - an important objective measure,” Zhiqiang Meng, co-principle investigator of the study, said.The largest group differences in XQ scores were seen by the end of radiotherapy, but the differences persisted over time, and one month after the end of radiotherapy, 54.3 percent of the acupuncture group reported XQ scores greater than 30, compared to the control group at 86.1 percent.Almost six months after radiotherapy, the numbers dropped to 24.1 percent in the acupuncture group and 63.6 percent of the control group still reporting symptoms of xerostomia.Saliva flow rates were also greater in the acupuncture group, starting at three weeks into radiotherapy and persisting through the one and six month follow-up.The study has been published in the journal Cancer.

Researchers in Denmark have found that intense workouts for shorter periods daily are better for the heart and could add up to an extra five years to someone`s life, the latest edition of the `Hypertension` journal reported. The Danish study by Bispebjerg University Hospital adds to evidence that moderate exertion, while clearly beneficial, might not be all that is needed to give the best level of protection against cardio vascular disease. Men who believed they rode at an average speed could expect another 2.9 years of life, and such women 2.2 years. The analysis, based on data from the Copenhagen City Heart Study, suggested those who cycled fast for between half an hour and an hour a day were likely to live longest. Relative to slow cyclists, they had a 56 per cent lower risk of dying overall during the study period, which included a 74 per cent lower risk of dying from coronary heart disease. The study was based on people without health problems such as hypertension or diabetes, aged 20 to 90.

A home at the Grange

Strolling around the tranquil willow-fringed lake with lawns carpeted with delicate white flowers, it's hard to imagine that nearby, 125 metres below ground, is one of the shafts from Ballarat's busiest and most prestigious goldmine, Prince of Wales. Leckie was the "top manager" of Prince of Wales. So successful was the mine (more than 250,000 kilograms of gold extracted), visiting dignitaries wanted to witness the glory firsthand.During a royal tour in 1867, Prince Alfred Ernest Albert (the Duke of Edinburgh) was presented with a gold nugget.Today, the grey, heritage-listed Blythewood Grange is complemented by heritage-listed red-brick Edwardian buildings. These are in a similar style - and for good reason - to another Ballarat landmark property, Nazareth House, by the shores of Lake Wendouree. A religious order, the Sisters of Nazareth, operated a convent and girls' home from Nazareth House. After the Leckie family (Leckie had 11 children) left Blythewood Grange, the Bishop of Ballarat lobbied the sisters to acquire the property to build a boys' home and working farm. Successful, the bishop laid a foundation stone in 1911. Classrooms, dormitories and recreational grounds were envisaged and St Joseph's Home had its grand opening in 1913. Ninety boys moved in, as well as five nuns, who used the original mansion as a convent. A chapel was built, which became the local church, and the on-site kindergarten school became the local kindergarten, too. For 70 years, St Joseph's cared for children - 2500 of them. In 2003, a global hotel consortium bought the site and faithfully redeveloped it. Today, while walking along the quiet corridors, you can imagine children running up and down them, flitting between classrooms and dormitories. These rooms are now self-contained studios and apartments. Original features also help set the scene. Lime-green tiles along corridor walls cheerily feature blooming red roses; outside in the garden, 400 real rose bushes bloom. Stained-glass windows extend the flowering theme.The nursery wing is now resplendent with sunny reading rooms that overlook courtyards and gardens.Most of the boys who passed through St Joseph's spent time in the nursery, having arrived as babies. And although they could leave when they turned 16, many stayed on, including one boy until his 70th birthday. He became the head gardener.Those who chose to stay slept in the Farm Boys wing, which is now a handful of plush rooms. The boys weren't allowed to turn up at the mansion's front door, let alone knock on it. But today, the old boys do come knocking, even if a little reticently,

Verizon Wireless in $3.6-billion spectrum deal with cable giants

Verizon Wireless has struck a deal to buy licenses for wireless communications spectrum from SpectrumCo, a joint venture owned by Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, for $3.6 billion. The deal, announced Friday morning, is for wireless spectrum that has the potential to reach about 259 million people, and will require approval from government regulators. It is seen as a sign that the cable companies are not eager to spend billions of dollars on their own on a wireless strategy. "This sale of spectrum is an important step toward ensuring that the needs and desires of consumers for additional mobile services will not be thwarted by the current spectrum shortage," the companies said in a statement. Miller Tabak & Co. analyst David C. Joyce said the sale is evidence that the "cable industry tacitly acknowledges that they cannot do wireless on their own." As part of the deal, the parent companies of SpectrumCo and Verizon Wireless agreed to sell each others' products.
